FIZ Karlsruhe signs the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information

Karlsruhe, 25.09.2024 — FIZ Karlsruhe, represented by President & CEO Prof. Dr. Wolfram Horstmann, has signed the Barcelona Declaration, thus joining a growing number of research institutions that are committed to promoting open research information.

The aim of the Barcelona Declaration is to open up access to scientific information and to drive the transition from closed to open data infrastructures. Closed systems hinder transparency and make it difficult to detect errors and biases in scientific data. Well-known examples of this are proprietary databases such as Web of Science and Scopus, which restrict access and charge high subscription fees.

By signing the declaration, FIZ Karlsruhe commits itself to supporting open services and systems that facilitate open access to research information. FIZ Karlsruhe is already making data available free of charge with services such as zbMATH Open. In addition, FIZ Karlsruhe has introduced its own Open Access Policy, which aims to provide free access to scientific publications and information.
