Science Data Center MoMaF (SDC MoMaF)

The science data center for molecular materials research (SDC MoMaF) is one of four research data centers to be established in Baden-Württemberg until 2023. They are sponsored by the Baden-Württemberg ministry for science, research and the arts and are supposed to become partners within the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) founded in 2020.

SDC MoMaF will establish research data management for the faculties of chemistry and materials science at KIT. FIZ Karlsruhe closely collaborates with the scientific institutes of KIT, the KIT library, and Steinbuch Centre for Computing (SCC), the KIT’s central data processing center. Karlsruhe University will contribute to the development of an electronic lab book.

FIZ Karlsruhe will assess the research data sets of SDC MoMaF with regard to copyright issues. This will provide a legal basis to determine who within the research process will decide on archiving, making accessible, and reusing digital research data. Conditions of use and licensing recommendations can also be derived, which serve the subject-specific implementation of the FAIR principles or Open Science.

The technical development steps of SDC MoMaF are continuously monitored with regard to data privacy law. This view on data privacy focuses on the planned intelligent networking and analysis tools or on publication mechanisms with generation of DOIs and other metadata. In addition, FIZ Karlsruhe will mainly contribute legal information to the process of integrating research data management into the training of young scientists.

At state level, FIZ Karlsruhe is actively contributing the SDC MoMaF 's legal expertise to the working group on law, thus working with the other three SDC towards common science-friendly standards for research data management.
