From Open Access to Open Science: jurOA conference with keynote by FIZ employee Thomas Hartmann

In a large study, Thomas Hartmann investigated how the requirements of the German Research Foundation's Code of Good Scientific Practice, which has been legally binding since August 2023, on the objectives of Open Access and Open Science are legally anchored and implemented at universities in Germany. The focus is on fields of action relating to digital work in science, research data management and the associated requirements for infrastructures and digital tools. He conducted the study in cooperation with the Institute for Library and Information Science at Humboldt University, Berlin.

In his keynote speech, Thomas Hartmann explained guidelines from the DFG Code in a hybrid setting with an online and on-site audience in Berlin. Following on from this, he discussed the latest copyright regulations, for example for the use of generative artificial intelligence for research purposes, as another important building block for open science. He emphasized the challenges that arise for researchers and research institutions in this context:  " Copyright law and Good Scientific Practice (GSP) differ in their objectives, principles and, to some extent, in the measures derived from them. The GSP contains and supports the goals of Open Science. The new GSP had to be legally binding in its minimum requirements by August 01, 2023. The extent to which this actually promotes the goals of Open Science remains to be seen and is not least up to the researchers and scientific institutions themselves."
